Notes | Extract from Whitehaven News 12th June 1919 LARGE MILITARY FUNERAL AT HENSINGHAM On Tuesday afternoon the last remains of Duncan H Farrell eldest son of Mrs Armstrong, Keekle Terrace who was accidently killed at Windscales mines , on Friday Last , were interred with military honours. A detachment of the 2nd Battn. Border Regt. Carlisle under the command of Sgt. Hodgson comprised the firing part and acted as bearers. The Cleator Moor St Johns band was in attendance and played the Dead March in Saul in a solemn manner , under the leadership of Mr Kirkby . Prior to the cortege leaving Keekle the Mission choir and friends sang Abide With Me at the residence of the deceased . The burial service was conducted by Rev E Freeman ,as the cortege entered the Church the organist (Mr Glenn) rendered suitable voluntaries and the congregation sang Peace Perfect Peace,as the cortege left the church the organist played the Dead March in Saul . The interment took place in Hensingham Cemetery and was largely attended by villagers and fellow workmen. At the close of the service the usual volley firing took place. The coffin was covered with Floral wreaths and flowers from the following :- Keekle FC , Mrs. Branney, Miss Bland ,John Houston, Mary Reay, Mrs. Edgar , Mrs. Carty , Mrs Kirkbride , Mr. & Mrs. Ashton Mrs. &Mrs. Galloney and others. The coffin bore the inscription Duncan Harold Farrell Died 6th June 1919. Mr Robinson was the undertaker. Deceased enlisted in the Border Regiment serving some considerable time and was demobilised some months ago. Was killed by a fall of metal 06 Jun 1919, aged 26, working as a Miners' Labourer at the Windscales iron Ore mine , while still on Class Z Reserve . See external link 1 |
